As a kid, did you ever have a chance to go to work with your mom or dad? What did you experience?

I can remember a few times when I was about 7 or 8 that I got to visit my mother at work. She was a secretary at the local power company. 

I loved sitting at her desk. I remember thinking that she must be very important to have such a big desk! 

She had tons of papers and a typewriter, pens and pencils, and stuff! LOL I loved all of it. I can remember thinking that she must have such fun typing and answering the phone all day.... Yeah, I was delusional. ;)

She was always dressed to the nines when she went to work. I used to love dressing up in her clothes and pretending to be her. 

I can also remember a big Christmas party there. They had Santa and PRESENTS! I even remember what I got, a Barbie Doll, my favorite thing!


My mother didn't work outside of the home for very long. About a year later she was placed on permanent disability. 

I can't imagine how hard it must of been for her raising me on her own. 

I miss her everyday. In less than a year I will be older than she was when she passed away. It's so strange to think about it.

  1. (HUGS) she sounds like a great mom and role model. I remember going to visit my dad at his job...it was always so weird to see our parents as more than just our parents.

      My dad worked in the coal mines when I was little. I can remember him coming home covered in coal dust.

  2. I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. I can't imagine. But I love the way you remember seeing her at work and being in awe of her. She sounds like she was an amazing woman. And she raised an amazing woman!

  4. ((HUGS)) I can't imagine what it feels like to lose Mom. I'm so sorry. She may have found it difficult to raise you alone, but the end result was worth every minute, I'm sure.

  6. I love this, Stacy! It made me remember going on night cleaning jobs with my mom a couple of times. I was given the job of emptying the trash cans at the desks...I was so cool at the age of 7, lol!

    HUGS for losing your mom at a young age. She'd be very proud of you!

  7. I used to go with my dad on Saturdays. He would buy donuts and chocolate milk. He worked on rebuilding carburetors. It was loud but fun

  8. A big desk, getting to dress up, pencils and a Holiday party with Barbie gifts for the young guests, what's not to love!
    So sorry to hear that you lost your amazing mom so early. However I get the feeling that her legacy lives on in you!

  9. That is awesome you dressed up as your mom to pretend to be like her. Like I can only dream my kids would ever do that... Well wait, the more I think about it, my kids hopefully will have more ambition than to be like me LOL. Barbie was also my favorite thing to get as a kid.

  10. Stacy, what a beautiful memory. I can just see you, answering a phone and twirling around in a swivel chair. Your mom would be smiling big to see you thinking about such an important day in your life.
