Our Week in Review - October 18-24, 2014

It's been a busy week!! Are there any other kind??? LOL Today we are headed out to a fall festival. We missed it last year since we lived somewhere else. SO GLAD to be back here!!!

I have been going crazy trying to find the time to get costumes done. OMG!!! Where has the month gone??? Do me a favor. Next year remind me to start costume sewing at least 2 months in advance. PLEASE!!!
As it stands right now, Pichu is finished, Anna is nearly done, and then I have to start on a quasi Mad Hatter for Deanna. HELP!!! There aren't enough hours in the day!! Of course, it doesn't help that Deanna is ALWAYS last minute with her Halloween requests. LOL

Here's our week!!

We dyed Deanna's hair purple. LOVE IT SO MUCH!!! Don't love how my hands turned purple for a couple of days... LOL

I cheated and bought a cookie kit for Cailey and Colin to decorate. They then proceeded to eat ALL the cookies.....

I baked owl brownies for one of our co-ops. We have a monthly party to celebrate any birthdays in that month. We have a picnic and everyone brings a snack to share. These were a big hit! There were none left! WOO HOO!! Not like last month when I brought store bought cupcakes.... Hey, I was pressed for time! ;)

These are the landscapes that Cailey and Colin painted in art class that day.
This led to a big discussion on art between Colin and myself. He thought that he wasn't "good at art". I brought up Google and showed him various unconventional artists, Picasso, Pollock, Lichtenstein, Matisse, and Warhol. Then we talked about how art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. We talked about how his art work wouldn't and shouldn't look like Cailey's, mine or anyone else's!! It should be all his.
I think I got through to him. He seemed MUCH happier afterwards.

Then we had our other co-op. It was a miserable day, all rainy and chilly, but we went and had fun anyway!
I brought a bunch of supplies to make paper bag monster puppets.

Another mom brought a cool sticky spider toss game. (I forgot to get pics of that.)

Another mom brought ingredients for ghostly goop. This was a HUGE hit with the kids. (And a science experiment, too! LOL)

The same mom brought needle felting supplies in case any of us would like to try it out. I did and I love it!!! I always wanted to try it but thought it looked too difficult and time consuming. It's neither. It's SO MUCH FUN!!! I love it. I think I am going to order a beginner's kit from her. Like I need another hobby... LOL

The other day I got a surprise anonymous package in the mail. It contained that gorgeous hand stamped necklace. I can't tell you how much that thoughtful gift touched my heart. I will always be a West Virginia girl, no matter where I am or how long I've been gone. West Virginia is in my blood and in my heart forever.
That gift is me. I wish I could thank the person properly. It made my day, week, month, no it made my year. Not only the fact that it is SO ME, but to know that someone out there thought enough of me to send it. That someone out there cares enough to spend their time to search out the perfect thing to speak to my heart. Thank you. The words don't seem enough.....

Our Week in Review - State Fair, Michaelmas and More

We were SUPER busy this past week! More busy than usual!!

We went to the fair on Sunday! SO MUCH FUN! We haven't been since 2011!!!

On Tuesday the kids had their art and geography classes.

On Wednesday our other homeschool group had their Michaelmas celebration!

I've been working on Halloween costumes! Anna and Pichu are taking shape!

Cailey and Colin each won 3 prizes, although this picture only shows 2 each.

They JUMPED off the TALL platforms!!! OMG!!! My heart!!! But they loved it!!!

They rode every ride they could!

And they ate EVERYTHING! Well, maybe not everything, just cotton candy, pizza, elephant ears, ice cream and lemonade! LOL

They also got to ride ponies but my pictures turned out terrible! :(

In art class they made paint from egg yolks and chalk. It was very easy and I was surprised at how vibrant the colors were!

LOOK at THIS!!! I've been meaning to post this for a couple of weeks now. The Hubby found it for me at a yard sale for $20!! It is a 1966 Sears Kenmore. I love it. It doesn't actually work right now but I plan on taking it to a repair shop.

LAST week at our Wednesday group, I led the kids in making a papier mache shield like we did when we studied the Middle Ages. We did THAT for our Michaelmas celebration this week.

Deanna is the brave knight on riding her trusty steed to slay the dragon!

This is Colin dressed up as the dragon's fire.

The kids had SO MUCH fun!!!!!

                    HAVE FUN LEARNING!!!!!!

Our Week in Review - First Week of School 2014

Our first week back to school!! WOOO HOOO!!! It was a short week, only 3 days but we managed to get quite a bit accomplished!

New pajamas for a new school year!!!
The tutorial for the nightgown can be found under Little Birdie Nightgown. I'll be posting the tutorial for Colin's chevron pjs next week!

Breakfast on our first day was Funfetti pancakes. SOOOO GOOD!!

We built da Vinci's ornithopter! This is from a book I bought at Five Below. We tried taking it outside to see how well it would fly but a piece got stuck and we couldn't get it to work. :(

While reading about da Vinci we learned that he was fascinated with birds. We looked around the yard for a feather to sketch. Usually there are feathers all over the place but we had a very strong storm the night before. All I could find was that sad little feather.

Then Cailey and Colin painted their bird pictures.

We also built a siege engine. I found the kit at Barnes & Noble for $6 and I couldn't pass it up! The drawbridge and catapult really work!

I found a set of word puzzles for $3 at Target and thought they would be a fun way for Colin to play with words.

Here are a few other pics, not necessarily from this week but more like a few weeks. ;)

A cool looking moth I found on our kitchen door.

We live in the city but you wouldn't be able to tell from all of the wildlife around us. This is a falcon that keeps coming to our yard looking for chipmunks to eat! He missed out that day.

How was YOUR week???

Leonardo da Vinci Unit Study Resources

Our first topic this year will be Leonardo da Vinci. We will be using this for science, history and art! LOVE it when one topic covers so many areas. Makes everything so much simpler. ;)

Here is a list of the books that I know we will be using. Afterward I post a larger list of books and ebooks.

The books should be easily found at Amazon or your local library.

This one has 21 activities!!

This one has a kit to build your own ornithopter.

Those are the books we are planning to use. I will probably add one or two free Kindle books to the list, as well.
