DIY Easter Egg Table Runner - Sewing Tutorial

I have a couple of quick last minute Easter projects for you!

These are SOOO fast and easy to make!!! 

What I Used -

Less than 1/2 yard of main fabric
Scraps for the "eggs"
Double sided Heat N Bond
Scrap of the main for the mug rug
Scrap of coordinating fabric for the mug rug


Step 1 -

First you're going to hem around all 4 sides. 
Just fold over 1/4" and press. Then fold over 1/2" and press. 
OR you can just cut it with pinking sheers. ;) 


Step 2 -

Cut your double sided Heat N Bond to fit your scraps. 

Follow the directions on the Heat N Bond package to attach it to your scraps.

Leave the paper backing on!!!!

Cut out 7 eggs (6 for the table runner, 1 for the mug rug).


Step 3 -

Peal the paper off the back of the eggs and iron onto the table runner.


Step 4 -

Zigzag stitch around all the eggs.
I used a coordinating thread but I'm thinking it may have popped more if I had used a contrasting thread. 


Now, on to the mug rug!!!!


Step 1 - 

I used 2 different prints in the same color for the front and back of my mug rug. If those prints look familiar they are the rain drops on my Splish Splash Rain Cape. ;) 

I cut the double sided Heat N Bond to fit the scraps. 


Step 2 - 

Following the instructions on the Heat N Bond, iron to the wrong side of one of your pieces. 
Peel the paper off the back and iron it onto the wrong side of your other piece.
Cut around the sides with pinking shears (or regular scissors just to even it all up). 

Step 3 -

Sew around the edges. 

Then iron the egg onto the center of the mug rug.


Step 4 - 

Zigzag stitch around the edges.

Once again I used a coordinating thread. I think next time I will definitely try a contrasting thread. ;)

DIY Easter Egg Centerpiece

I had SO much fun making these!!!!
I first got the idea from a present I bought The Hubby for Valentine's Day. I got him one of those candy bouquets from Kroger. They had candy bars taped to skewers stuck down in styrofoam with deco mesh in a vase. 

For the first one I did (the one on the right) I used the left over parts of that candy bouquet, the styrofoam and deco mesh. 
Then I bought 2 bags of plastic eggs in 2 different sizes. 
I also grabbed some floral wire and fabric scraps (obviously I decided to use some different scraps LOL). 

The eggs I bought already had holes in the tops and bottoms. PERFECT!! Except the wire wanted to go all the way through. :/ 
I grabbed my trusty pal,  the glue gun, and put a little hot glue on the inside of the tops of the eggs. Now they don't slip all the way down. 

Then I just inserted the eggs on wires into the styrofoam (the deco mesh was already there). 

Next, I set the whole thing in the middle of the scrap fabric. 
Pull the fabric up around the sides. Gather it at the top and tie with ribbon.

ALL DONE!!!!!!!

Now, I did that one before I realized that they make eggs on sticks.... Really CUTE eggs on sticks.... SO when I saw those really cute eggs on sticks, I knew I had to make another one!!!!! 

I bought 2 bags of eggs on sticks in 2 different sizes, deco mesh, bobby pins, paper grass stuff, a rectangle piece of floral foam,  and those little eggs that I didn't use. 
$6 for the stuff that I used!!! CHEAP!! Oh, yeah.. I got it all at the Dollar Tree. ;)

Cut a piece of deco mesh (the size is up to you) and twist the center. Secure that by pushing the bobby pin through it in a couple of places.

Insert into the floral foam. 


Now, just stick in those really cute eggs on sticks!!! 

Next, place the floral foam on your scrap fabric. Wrap the fabric and hot glue in place.

Bunch the top of the fabric around the top of the foam and tie the ribbon!! 

ALL DONE!! Now you have some really cute Easter Egg centerpieces that will be irresistible to your cats! Trust me on that one. ;) 

Oh, see those cute bunny ear candles??? A splurge from Yankee Candle. They were toooooo cute to pass up!!!

Oh, and that table runner???? Next week's tutorial!! ;)

Well...... You see.... I sorta... Well... I forgot to write down the funny stuff again. I know, I know... I suck at this! SIGH.... 

Anyway, I thought I would share pictures of some of the stuff that we've done this month. Now that's it trying to get a little warmer we will be out and about and doing a lot more fun things! :D

We had 2 good snows this month. The kids LOVED it!!! 

Unfortunately, I couldn't seem to keep up with their gloves so I made them some out of fleece. From what the kids said, they were much warmer and stayed much drier than regular mittens or gloves. :D

In spite of the bad weather, we managed to make it to one of the Lowe's Build N Grow workshops. 

WOW! Colin had major hoodie hair! 

   

They had their last art class. Here they were studying Dali. 

Next up is architecture! They will be learning how to read plans and draw their own plans!! :D

This is from our other homeschool group (we are in 2). We were planting seeds for spring! Cailey and Colin were adding acorn "hats" and rocks to their pots. 

This is what our grass looks like now!! LOL It went crazy! :D

We got the cats a new cat house. I think they like it. LOL

The oldest 2 boys decided to get pet rats. I think the cats like them, too. ;)

This is from one of our geography classes. They were learning about Bermuda so the teacher had them pretend to be mommy turtles laying their eggs in sand. The kids had to put the cotton balls (eggs) in the bucket without using their hands. They had SO MUCH fun with that activity!!!

In our other group moms take turns leading Fun Shops. I volunteered to lead our St Patrick's Day FUn Shop.

We made leprechaun traps! In Ireland (a long time ago) people would put a box with a coin in it in their yards in hopes of catching a leprechaun. 

We also did pepper prints. If you cut off the top of a pepper, the bottom makes a wonder clover print!!

I also made bean bags out of the shamrock print burlap but I forgot to take a picture of them. :/

After the Fun Shop the kids couldn't help but play in the mud and creek! 

Last weekend was very sunny and warm so we went to the park with friends. 

Wednesday we had another meeting with one of our homeschool groups. We had a mini carnival! There were a bunch of games set up, face painting, crafts and more! We made paper flowers for the first time!! 

We have a ton of fun stuff coming up, including our first trip to the symphony!! I can't wait!!!! 

Eileen from Eileen's Perpetually Busy will be in the area and we will be meeting up like we always do when she's in town. I CAN'T WAIT!!!!! 

OH! And birthdays galore!! Cailey's is the 23rd, mine is the 25th and Colin's is the 31st!!! YAY!!!!

As I write this there is still a little snow on the ground. I love it. Snow is one of my favorite things.

But it's melting, turning all the dirt into mud. That means one thing, spring is on its way! With spring comes another one of my favorite things, flowers!

Ok, that was a little toooooo easy. ;) Let's take this in another direction.

Here are my words again and what they mean to me. 

MUD - I am not one of those moms that freaks out when their kids get dirty. I actually encourage my kids to get out in the mud and roll around! LOL Play in it!! Make mud pies!! Have mud fights!!! 
I think we should let the kids BE kids. Let them play! They are only children for such a short time. We make playing a priority. ;)

SPRING - My 2nd favorite season, after autumn and before winter. I love how green everything gets, how new it all is. I love all the flowers. I love how all the animals respond to the warmer weather. 

What I DON'T like is the pollen!!!!

DIRT - See mud. Although, I don't like dirt getting tracked into the house. Drives me CRAZY!!!!!

FLOWERS - I love flowers!! I buy fresh cut flowers all the time. Why buy fresh cut when you can grow them?? Well, I CAN'T grow them. I am death to flowers. DEATH!!! I can't grow ANYTHING!!! It's so disappointing. 

SNOW - One of my FAVORITE things!! It's just so beautiful!! The only really beautiful thing about winter, really... I figure, if it's going to be cold, it might as well snow and be pretty! ;) Plus the kids love to play in it!!

Splish Splash Rain Cape DIY - Blog with Friends - Spring Fever Edition

This is the SPRING FEVER edition of Blog with Friends!! Who's ready for SPRING???? 7 bloggers, 7 projects to help welcome in SPRING!!!!! :D

I decided to go with a lightweight raincape for Cailey. You can wear it over a coat for chilly rainy days or by itself for warmer rainy days. 

This was my first time working with ripstop. I can't say that I am that impressed with it. BLECK!! If I did this over again, I would just keep searching until I found a light weight vinyl OR buy tons of this -

and make my OWN fabric!!!! 


What I Used 

3 yards of blindingly bright ripstop
1 package of Pellon Vinyl Fuse
1/2 yard of chevron
1/2 yard of that other print 

I started off searching and searching for cute vinyl print. SIGH... I found one but it was WAY too heavy to make a cape/coat out of. I bought it anyway. I'm sure I'll figure out some use for it.

Then I grabbed the ripstop. But it was just soooo plain, despite the day glow color! 

That's when I found the Pellon Vinyl Fuse!!!! I decided I would make some appliques with it and jazz up that raincape!!! 


Step 1

Fold over your fabric until you have a triangle. 
Measure down the sides and the middle, marking the points. Connect the points and cut. 

See that camo riptstop?? SIGH... I promised Colin some sort of rain gear out of it. 


Step 2

Cut a slight curve a couple of inches from the top.


Step 3

Cut straight down the middle.


Step 4

You can use the hood of another jacket or hoodie or whatever as your template. I used the pattern I made for Colin's Minecraft Hoodie and sized it up. 

Cut 4 pieces.


Step 5

Take 2 pieces and sew around the back curve. Do the same to the other 2 pieces.


Step 6

Take one set and turn it right side out.
Slide it into the other one.
Sew around the front curve.


Step 7

Turn it all right side out and top stitch along the front of the hood.


Step 8

Pin the bottom of the hood to the neck. 

Sew in place. 


Step 9 

Apparently ripstop WILL unravel. :/ So what I did was just zigzag stitch around all the raw edges. Much easier than trying to hem a circle! BLECK!!! 

Step 10

Next, I took the vinyl fuse and following the directions, fused it with the 2 prints.

Then I cut out raindrop shapes. 


Step 11

Pin the shapes on where ever you like.

Then, using a tight zigzag stitch, sew all around the raindrops.

Move the cat so you can photograph your work.

Step 12

So, I wanted to reinforce the area where the button and buttonhole go.... Then I melted the riptop.... So I had to make a patch out of double sided fuse. :P 

Then I added the button and the buttonhole. 

After that you are ALL DONE!!!!!

I apologize for the quality of some of the pictures. I am still trying to figure out the camera on my new phone and I don't think it liked the color of the ripstop. LOL It looks SO MUCH better in person than it does in any of the pictures.
