DIY St. Patrick's Day Door Hanger - No SEW!!!

I have something super easy for you right here! And for those of you that don't sew, don't worry, no sewing needed!!! Just grab your glue gun, tacky glue or fabric glue!!!

I have been seeing those cute burlap door hangers all over the place. Owls, hearts, you name it, but I didn't want to pay a ton of money for them. That's when I decided to try it myself. SO glad I did!!!

WHAT I USED

1 1/2 yards of printed burlap
Green ribbon
Gold ribbon
Hot glue gun
Poly fill
Paper bag to make the pattern

Step 1

I used a paper bag (think Kroger) and cut out a heart shape.

Step 2

Then I placed the heart on another paper bag and traced around it.
If I did this again, I think I would move the top heart up a bit more just for more definition.

Anyway...

Then cut out your pattern.

Cut 2 pieces from the burlap.

Steps 3 and 4

With a wrong side up, hot glue around the edges and place the other piece to it. Make sure to leave an opening at the bottom.

After the hot glue is dry, stuff it with poly fill or scraps or whatever you like.

Step 5

Cut your ribbons to whatever length you like and glue one end inside the clover.

Glue the opening closed.

Step 6

Hot glue the gold ribbon to the back.
Now if I had been thinking properly, I would have glued this to the inside of the darn thing. My mind rarely works properly......

ALL DONE!!!!!!!

Let me know what you think!!!!!

I think I might have to make some more of these burlap door hangers! ;) The possibilities are endless!!!

I will have another St Patrick's Day home decor post coming up soon! A table runner and table decor! :D

OH! Before I forget!! I finished the other Japanese Knot Bag!!!

I really like the way it turned out! :D And my customer can't wait to get them! YAY!!!!!

Blog with Friends - Creative Cupids - King and Queen of Hearts Crowns

Welcome to this month's Blog with Friends post!! This month we are the Creative Cupids and will be bringing you tons of Valentine's Day fun!!

For my part, I will be showing you how to make these King and Queen of Hearts Crowns. Just because I used a sewing machine doesn't mean YOU have to. You can use a glue gun or fabric glue to achieve something similar.

WHAT I USED

Sheets of felt in Valentine's Day colors
Iron on interfacing
Iron on stars
Plastic gems
Flower trim

STEP 1

Cut one piece of felt in half.

STEP 2

Sew the ends together.
Fold in half and sew a long seam.
Turn right side out.

STEP 3

Take a sheet of felt and cut the interfacing to fit. Iron on the interfacing.

STEP 4

Fold the piece in half and cut out 1 large heart.
Repeat until you have 2 large hearts with interfacing and 2 large hearts without interfacing.

Then cut 2 smaller hearts with interfacing and 2 smaller hearts without interfacing.

In a different color, cut 4 hearts without interfacing. These will need to fit on top of 2 large hearts and 2 smaller hearts.

STEP 5

Now, take your hearts and put 1 interfaced heart with one heart without interfacing, matching up the sizes.

Sew together with a close zigzag stitch.

STEP 6

Place the other color hears on top and zigzag stitch in to place.

STEP 7

Measure the long thin piece to fit your child's head.
Cut and sew the ends together.

STEP 8

Add embellishments to the hearts.

STEP 9

Glue the hearts to the band and add embellishments.

With the pink crown, I cut 1 large heart with interfacing and 1 without. Then I cut 2 smaller hearts with interfacing and 2 without.

ALL DONE!!

Easy Valentine's Day Decor

I have a SUPER fast and SUPER easy project for you today!! I did all 3 jars and the table runner in under an hour!!! AND I got everything but the fabric at the Dollar Tree! EASY! FAST! CHEAP!

The Table Runner

What I Used-

1/4 yard of printed Valentine's Day fabric (from Joann's)

1/8 yard of plain red cotton

Pinking shears

STEP 1

I measured out the length and width that I wanted for my runner.

STEP 2
Then I cut it using my pinking shears. (No need to hem it!!!!)

STEP 3

My iron threw up on my fabric. ;)

Then I pinned the red down the middle of the print and sewed it on with a straight stitch.

ALL DONE!!!!! I told you it was quick and easy!!!

The Jars

What I Used

I got the glittery heart stickers, foam heart stickers and chenille stems from the Dollar Tree!

Step 1

Cut the fabric pieces with pinking shears to the size of your jar.

Step 2

Hot glue the bigger piece to the jar.
Then hot glue the smaller piece of top of it.

Step 3

Hot glue ribbon around the top.

Step 4

Stick on the sticker.

Step 5

Since I had small jars, I cut the chenille stems in half.
Then I stuck the foam hearts on top.

ALL DONE!!!

See how easy????

Make a Medieval Tapestry

Make a Medieval Tapestry

So, I've been racking my brain to think of ideas for our Middle Ages unit that are NOT run of the mill and I think I may have hit on one!

Yesterday we made our own tapestries!! Well,  sort of.... We did break out a loom or anything like that. We did it OUR way. ;)

I dug out a couple of scraps of fabric that were sitting on top of one of my fabric boxes and decided they would work just fine.

Then I hunted down the dowel rods that I knew were here SOMEWHERE!

After that I hunted high and low for yarn or twine... ANYTHING to hang them with!! I got lucky and found some string.

When we got to our Middle Ages study I showed Cailey and Colin different pictures of medieval tapestries and explained how they were used.

Then I sat them in front of the fabric scraps with their paints and brushes and let them go.

This is what they came up with.

Medieval Tapestry 014

Colin went with a shield and knights.

The lighting for this pic was terrible and using the flash only made it worse! LOL

Medieval Tapestry 005

Cailey went with a unicorn and rose vines.

After the paint dried, I put a ton of glue at the tops and wrapped them around the dowels. Then I added the strings to end.

Viola! Medieval tapestries!!!

You could always have your child try their hand at a bit of embroidery.

Make Your Own Shield and Sword

We are a week into studying the middle ages and having a TON of fun with it!!!!

We drew motte and bailey castles, read books, watched videos and now we've made our own shields and swords!

I started out by cutting the shield shapes from thin cardboard, like the long, flat boxes that 24 packs of soda come in.

Then I stapled the handles to the back, once again using the same thin cardboard, but from the sides of the boxes.

Next I made the paste! I sort of eyeball the paste when I make it but I use a little flour, Elmer's Glue (almost 2 bottles) and water. For one child or smaller projects I would make about 1/2.

Shield and Sword Papier Mache 016

Then they started layering!

Once the shields were dry (the next day), we glued aluminum foil to the front and back, making sure to cover the handle as well.

After that, they painted them.

For the swords I used cardboard from one of our moving boxes and just cut out the shape.

Then we used paper mache on them as well.

Next came aluminum foil and construction paper.

Finally, they decorated the hilts with glitter glue.

Here is Colin's finished sword!

They had so much fun making them and have been battling it out ever since! LOL

DIY Burlap and Cardboard Initial

Burlap and Cardboard Initial

Here it is, my burlap and cardboard initial for our front door. It was very easy to make (other than the blisters on my fingers from the hot glue gun) and the decorations on the letter can be changed with the season.

What I Did -

I cut 3 letter Bs out of cardboard and hot glued them together to make them thicker and sturdier.

Next, I cut out 2 pieces of burlap using the letter B as a guide.  I made them large enough to overlap on the edges.

Then I cut out pieces from a Halloween print and hot glued velcro to the backs.

I made bow and glued velcro to it as well.

Then I hot glued the burlap to the letter, overlapping it.

Lastly, I used some black, shiny rickrack to tie to our front door!

It was very quick and easy! :D

I wanted something that I could change with the seasons/holidays without having to keep recreating it. ;)

Let me know if the directions are clear or not.

No Sew Notebook Cover

no sew notebook cover

More crafting for the new school year!

We had a couple of old composition books around that the kids didn't use last year. I had an idea to pretty them up a little bit.

What I used :

Scrap fabric

Ribbon

Glue gun

I made a few mistakes here and there but I will tell you alllll about them in the steps! LOL

STEP 1 -

no sew notebook cover 001

Put your notebook on top of the fabric with the bottom of the notebook hanging over about 1/2". Leaving 2" on both sides of the notebook, cut around.

STEP 2 -

no sew notebook cover 006

Cut 2 pieces of ribbon 2" past the edges of the notebook.

STEP 3 -

no sew notebook cover 008

Cut a piece of ribbon about 4" longer than the notebook (this will be the place mark).

STEP 4 -

no sew notebook cover 010

While your notebook is closed*, put some hot glue on the binding and attach the place mark.

*I had it open.

STEP 5 -

no sew notebook cover 013

With your notebook closed*, add hot glue to the spin, center your fabric and attach it.

STEP 6 -

no sew notebook cover 014

Add hot glue around the edges of one side and wrap the fabric around. Do that to both sides.

(You should have some room at the top and bottom where the cover is longer than the fabric.)

STEP 7 -

no sew notebook cover 015

Open the notebook, hot glue the edges of the fabric and stick it to the inside.

STEP 8 -

no sew notebook cover 016

Close the notebook, add hot glue to the top edges and place your ribbon on top. *Do NOT mash the ribbon down. I think that's why mine looks wrinkly.

Do the same to the bottom edges.

Open the notebook back up and glue the edges of the ribbon to the inside.

ALL DONE!!!!!

no sew notebook cover 017

I made this one for Cailey because she LOOOOVES SpongeBob!!!

no sew notebook cover 023

And I made this one for me! ;)

I am going to try my hand at adding the fabric to spiral bound notebooks. I'll let you know how that goes. ;)
